Team Evanston's Boys 96/97 Premier team climbed to the top of the Illinois youth soccer world following a triumphant Memorial Day weekend run at the Potomac Memorial Tournament in Germantown, Maryland. The team advanced to the elimination round with shutout victories in bracket play over Boston, New York, and Pennsylvania teams, and blanked Philadelphia Coppa Arsenal (PAE), currently ranked 17th in the nation. In addition to besting teams ranked in the national Top 20, Evanston did not yield a single goal in regulation play the entire tournament. They are currently ranked first in Illinois, 6th in the 14-state USYSA Region 2, and 68th nationally. This is the second Team Evanston squad to be ranked #1 in Illinois, following the 95/96 Premier team. Many members of the team competed on the ETHS varsity team that made a run to the Illinois Sectional finals last fall. Other members played on high school teams such as Grayslake Central, Niles North, Von Steuben, Deerfield, Glenbrook North, Maine South, and St. Benedict Prep.
The team competes in the State Cup semifinals May 31st - June 1st in Naperville, their second straight visit to the semis. This is the first year Team Evanston has placed three teams into the State Cup elimination round at the same time (they’re joined by the U16 and U18 squads). Good luck to them all!
